We’ve been in love, we’ve been happy people, but… then you just do it. You don’t write about it.

Woman I Love: Natalia Vodianova

A Childhood Without Play
Natalia Vodianova grew up in a poor district of Nizhny Novgorod with her mother and two half sisters, one of whom has cerebral palsy. Like most children living in urban environments across Russia, Natalia and her sisters had nowhere safe to play in the outdoors. As a teenager, Natalia helped her mother sell fruit on the street and later set up her own fruit stand with a friend to help her family out of poverty.
A Career in the Fashion Spotlight
When she was 17, Natalia was given the opportunity to work as a fashion model in Paris. By 2000 she was working with designers such as Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Yves Saint Laurent. She has been the face of Calvin Klein, Chanel, David Yurman, Guerlain and Jacob & Co., and is recognised as one of the world’s top fashion models. In 2001, Natalia married Justin Portman and gave birth to their first child. They now live permanently in the UK with their three children and are actively involved in the work of the Foundation in Russia.
Giving Children a Place to Play
Natalia’s experiences as a child and opportunities as an adult have allowed her to become a bridge between the international community and the needs of Russian children. In 2005, Natalia and Justin created the Naked Heart Foundation to construct modern Play Parks for less fortunate children in Russia. In Natalia’s own words:

“When I wanted to play as a child, there was really nowhere to go. My vision is to build safe play parks in as many towns as I can. I want the play parks to be for all children, including children with disabilities.”

With her milk I sucked in the love of the Russian people, of my province, of my homeland. … Through my nurse Russian became the first language that I commanded, though in my parents’ house Polish, German, and French were primarily spoken. And it was she who told me the wondrously beautiful Russian fairy tales, or sang, while rocking me, those Little Russian folk songs that stamped themselves upon my existence, my emotional world, and also all my later works.

“Sacher-Masoch’s identity as a Slavic Ruthenian came not only from supposed descent, but also from an intense connection to the Galician village girl who became his wet nurse in his infancy.”

A poet finds corresponding sounds in language the way a sculptor finds Venus in a block of marble.

“You’re my love flower.”

—A friend’s 6-year-old daughter

It’s worth noting that a few years ago, if you’d asked me how I felt about kids, I would probably have said that I hated them. Within the past year, I’ve met three really great kids who have definitely changed my mind. They’re all my friends’ kids. They all have their trademark personalities. One of them, a boy, is obsessed with Disney Princesses and enjoys dressing up in drag (though, he doesn’t understand the concept of “drag” quite yet).  Another, the daughter of a girl in my major, is probably the most energetic child I’ve ever met, but the way she says, “Are you kiddin’ me?” is ridiculously adorable. The other calls me Draco Poop instead of Max. Half the time.

I love kids. I love kids in all of their cute, loud, illogical, unfiltered, and insane glory.

“The elusive image of a woman, glimpsed in the subway, orbits in the memories of a man his entire life. That unknown woman of the subway… a vague image, almost a reflection. The vision of hardly a second, fleeting and elusive; indelible forever. He had only seen her once. Others, he had compared them all with the image engraved in his memory. …the feeling of having allowed it to escape from his life… the most crucial instant of his existence… the woman that destiny had chosen.”

Don’t get the impression that you rouse my anger… One can only be angry with those he respects.

- President Richard M. Nixon, to the press

Always give your best, never get discouraged, never be petty; always remember others may hate you, but those who hate you don’t win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.
